WordFoto Lesson Ideas
Lesson 1 - 3/4 Monochromatic Portraits
A big thanks to the Dryden Art website, which is where I first came across this art project.
Here are some work samples from Stage 3 students.
- Students sketch a 3/4 portrait of themselves outlining it in black marker.
- The portrait is painted in a monochromatic style. Students learn about how to make tints (add white to a base colour) and shades (add black to a base colour) and use these to show lighting and shadow effects on their portrait.
- Once they have finished painting they retrace with marker and add a pattern to their background.
- Take a photo of the completed artwork and then import the image into the WordFoto app.
- Create a word set of up to ten words that describe you. I asked students to include their name as one of their words so we could identify each artwork.
- There are a few different styles you can select from and you can fine tune the edge threshold and colour tolerance to vary the final image.

Lesson 2 - Character Portraits
- We read a chapter from 'The Thief Lord' by Cornelia Funke describing a character called Barbarossa. While the chapter was read aloud we focused on the skill of visualising and the students sketched words ideas, colour and shapes that came to mind as they listened to the chapter.
- Next, they drew their own interpretation of the character, Barabarossa, using a selection of media.
- They then took a photograph of their character portrait and imported into the WordFoto app.
- They had to create a new word list using words that described the character Barbarossa but that could also be located in the chapter.
